Abstract

Dust is a significant factor affecting the dynamics of the Martian atmosphere since it affects heating rates of the atmosphere and therefore effects its circulation. For this reasons an instrument for atmospheric dust collection and characterization in terms of size distribution would be of great scientific interest. The fluid flow field around the instrument and the interaction between dust and gas is analyzed. Theoretical as well numerical methods are developed and applied to this study, contemporaneously with an experiments campaign. A two-way interaction between theoretical and numerical studies on one side and experimental data on the other is applied to investigate physical phenomena involved and technology issues related to the instrument.
